A Up to date Kadampa occurs as equivalent word for the 14th Century Gelukpas (Dge-lugs-pa) school of Tibetan Buddhism, as founded by Je Tsongkhapa (Btsong-ka-pa); being wonderful admirer of the Kadampa teachings, Tsongkhapa was an enthusiastic promoter of the 11th Century Kadampa School's emphasis on the Mahayana principles of universal compassion as a fundamental spiritual orientation. Because of this nifty faith within a Kadampa, & when a Kadampa wwhen quickly absorbed in a Geluk tradition, a Geluk was easily known in xizang as the Just released Kadampa, though a equivalent word is less easily known inside English-speaking countries.
In the 1990s Geshe Kelsang Gyatso founded the New Kadampa Tradition (aka NKT) as a split from a Gelug school, derived from this equivalent word of the Geluk.
